Giovanine/Spurgin Roadster

I’m still on the road… We flew into Oklahoma City last night and as of this morning, I’m now in the car headed back to Austin. As such, I only have time for a quick post today. Luckily, Jimmy B did my work for me. In 1996, Curt Giovanine sat down with his dad, sister, and brother-in-law and pointed a modern video camera at the same wall in which an old 8mm video was playing. The result is some incredible footage of the Geovanine/Spurgin roadster matched up with a knowing voice over. It’s hard to watch just once.

2010 Lotus Exige S240

2010 Lotus Exige S240
Known for its sporty look, the 2010 Lotus Exige S240 is now circulating in the market with a few key enhancements – new front styling and new rear wing that gives a more muscular stance enhancing its lightweight shrink-wrapped look. It is mounted to the rear body shell clam via end plates which not only increases the stiffness of the whole structure but also ensures that as much of the airflow as possible passes over the rear wing. With this incorporated system, stability is increased, drag is reduced, and the impressive downforce is maintained. Exige has the same exceptional high performance and efficiency from a supercharged 1.8 liter Lotus-tuned and Toyota-sourced 2ZZ-GE engine with Intelligent Variable Valve Timing (VVT-i) reaching up to a 240hp and 170lb-ft of torque. Thus, if you think this is the same Lotus Exige, you are not mistaken but expect for the enhancements.

VW GTI-R Rumored to Debut in Frankfurt

vw_gti_mk6_new.jpg
According to CAR, VW is rumored to be prepping an even hotter version of the GTI, dubbed the GTI-R.

The R version of the GTI will not use the 3.2L V6 from the R32, instead a turbocharged four-cylinder with around 266 horsepower, which could be the same engine in the Audi S3. All that power will be mated to an all-wheel-drive system. To make up for the added weight of the awd system, VW will also seek to cut the weight by removing some features.

The GTI-R is rumored for an unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall and a release sometime in early 2010.

How to Beat Speeding Tickets

So you have a cool car and you want to show it off but you can’t seem to steer clear of the police radar? You’re not even doing anything wrong and they are still always following you, finding excuses to pull you over! Here are some ways you can show off your sweet ride and avoid a mishap with the police:

Don’t speed

It seems pretty easy, right? Wrong. When you have a nice car, it’s even harder to force yourself to follow the speed limits. Force yourself not to race that supercharged Mustang sitting next to you at the stoplight. When in doubt, only drive 30 mph.

Turn DOWN the music!

When you’re cruising, you really want to blast your favorite songs on your big bucks stereo system you just had installed, but try to avoid this when you spot police officers. Also, after 9 pm, turning down your music is another good idea. Many cities and towns have noise ordinances against cars and loud music.

Don’t obstruct your own view

This applies to anything in your windows, such as teddy bears from past boyfriends or girlfriends, garbage, etc. Also, window tint is extremely important. Your ride looks really suspicious if your tint is so dark that you can’t see inside. Believe it or not, there are laws limiting the visibility for window tint. Beware: I have seen police officers actually make people peel their tint off if it exceeds the legal limit!

Make sure all lights are in proper working order

This includes headlights, turning signals, running lights, brake lights, reverse lights, and even your license plate light. Each of these is a definite reason for a police officer to pull you over and in some cases, issue you a ticket. A malfunctioning light is very dangerous for you as well as other drivers.

Even though you may follow each of the above points of advice, you may still get pulled over from time to time while joyriding around town in your hot car. Studies have shown that police are more prone to pulling over nicer cars, especially red ones. However, if you use common sense and follow the rules of the road, you may lower your risk of seeing those flashing lights in your rear view mirror.

If this blog post wasn’t enough, be sure to check out a great guide on secrets to beating speeding tickets.

Hilo Hot Rod

I’m sitting high atop a cliff that looks over Hanalei Bay. We’ve got just about every door and window open in our little beach house and the waves are crashing hard down below us. The breeze is as cool and delivers as constantly as the Modelo Especial beer we’ve been drinking all weekend. Put simply and frankly, this is paradise.

And you’d think hot rods would be the furthest from my mind considering this environment. Of course, I’m a sick and deranged bastard. I’ve been fighting the urge all week to post about some of the conversations and ideas that Tardel and I have discussed while staring at the Pacific. Keith is a sick bastard too… We’ve talked a lot about hot rods – not the industry or our professions so much, but good ole traditional hot rods.

One that came to mind that both of us have contemplated at one time or another is the ‘39 convertible originally built by Harry Keiichi Nishiyama and later finished by Robert “Papio” Kaluna. Appropriately, both did their deeds while “stranded” in paradise – Hawaii. I was going to write a nice little piece about the car, but a google search turned up an article ran by Honolulu Streets Magazine. I figured you guys would enjoy it as much as Keith and I did.

Check it out.

Hemmings Find of the Day: Stroppe Baja Bronco

Stroppe Bronco for sale on Hemmings dot com

Ford’s first sport-utility vehicle got a lot of exposure thanks to Bill Stroppe’s racing efforts in the Ford Bronco in the late 1960s. To commemorate the success, Ford in 1971 began offering the Baja Bronco, a “limited production duplicate” of Stroppe’s racing Broncos. Ford painted the Baja Broncos Metallic Blue, Wimbledon White and Poppy Red, then shipped them to Stroppe himself for the remainder of the conversion, which included fender flares, a padded rollbar and oversize tires.

Carl Jackson drove one on the 1971 Baja 500, pulling a Sprite travel trailer the entire way in a publicity stunt for a Sprite distributor. Both Bronco and Sprite finished, and Sprite went on to advertise its product as “the travel trailer that beat Parnelli Jones in the Baja 500.” The Bronco ended up in Tucson, Arizona, in 2002, when Andrew Norton found it, purchased it, and verified its history.

One of estimated 600 produced. Race and prototype history documented. Never rusty, older restoration with updates including 351W, AC, 2″ lift, custom bucket seats, front disc brakes.

Andrew has more on the Baja, including the telltale signs that helped him verify the Bronc, over at his website, bajabronco.com.

Would be pretty cool to find that Sprite travel trailer and pair the two up again.

Flash of Genius: The Story of Robert Kearns

The new film, Flash of Genius, is the story of the inventor of the intermittent windshield wiper, Robert Kearns. It’s billed as a “hero versus the establishment” story, but the actual history is a bit more complicated.

Carmakers had known for a long time that existing windshield wipers weren’t getting the job done properly. They moved constantly, often scraping a dry windshield tearing up the blades edges. The solution was also obvious: an intermittent system that would wipe, then pause for a few seconds, then wipe again. Several inventors and engineers at Ford came up with designs, but each had various problems of their own.

Robert Kearns eventually came along with a system that worked better than the previous ones. He used an electrical current to flow and fill a capacitor, when the charge reached a certain voltage, it discharged and the wipers wiped. He took it to Ford, they showed interest, but eventually changed their minds. Ford did, however, end up using a system similar to Kearns’s. So Kearns sued.

Ford’s legal team argued that his patents were overly broad and therefore invalid. Former Ford engineer, Ted Daykin, told The New Yorker in a 1993 article, “An electronic timing device was an obvious thing to try next. How can you patent something that is in the natural evolution of technology?” The intermittent wiper, according to Daykin, was really the work of dozens of anonymous engineers at Ford, Trico, and other firms.

It really was an exceedingly simple and broad design, and yet Kearns eventually won his suit — $10.2 million from Ford in 1990 and $18.7 million from Chrysler in 1995, though both juries determined that the companies had not intentionally infringed on his patents.

The moral of the story? I’m not really sure. Patent an obvious idea and you can extort money from large corporations? The little guy is always right, even when he’s wrong? I can’t really pin down the exact moral here. I just know it hard for me to root for Robert Kearns.

Is Ford Going to Unveil a Taurus SHO Successor Next Month?

2010_ford_taurus_31.jpg
Ford officially unveiled the all-new 2010 Taurus at the Detroit Auto Show this week and now we have a new clue that a "performance" version is next to be unveiled.

Ford launched a brand new Taurus website. On the gallery page there is a small amount of text that says "Coming February 2009...Performance Series." Could this be a more powerful version of the Taurus with the new EcoBoost V6? It remains to be seen, but since the Chicago Auto Show is next month, we expect to see something there.

2009 Dodge Caliber SRT4: Compact Muscle

2009 Caliber SRT4
2009 Caliber SRT4

Although it’s the Neon’s replacement in the Chrysler family, the Caliber is not just a compact hatchback Crossover substitute. On the outside, it has the crosshair grille and tough-looking body panels present in many vehicles across the Dodge lineup. But while most of the Caliber models are inexpensive and useful, actual driving performance is lackluster at best. The SRT4 is Dodge’s way of injecting a little firepower into the Caliber.

In its most practical use as a people and cargo mover, the Caliber’s capabilities in hauling stuff is enhanced by rear seats that fold in a 60/40 split that increases cargo space to a maximum of 48 cubic feet. The front passenger seat can also be folded forward to make room for longer items, such as ladders, skis or surfboards. The Caliber has decent headroom and legroom in the front and back, but as a small car, 4 adults are the limit in what the it can comfortably accomodate. Impressively, in an increasingly crowded field of contenders, available all-wheel drive and variable transmission options do set the Caliber apart from the pack. Unfortunately, any advantage with potential customers that those options may give the Caliber are outweighed by its underwhelming power and handling. Dodge’s response to remedy this fact is the SRT4, whose turbocharged 4-cylinder engine produces 285 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque through the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission that gives it 21 and 26 mpg in city and highway driving. The SRT4 is over 100 horses higher than the next model down, the R/T, and nearly twice the amount of the base model. The SRT4 also gets, 19-inch wheels, lowered suspension, upgraded brakes, a performance trip computer and sport seats.

Caliber Interior
Caliber Interior

As seemingly impressive as those numbers would seem to indicate, the translation of this engine into a car that weighs over 3000 lbs. results in only a modest 0-60 mph time of 6.3 seconds. While that’s a nice figure, it does not allow the Caliber to completely pull away from other hatchbacks in this segment or make up for its weighty and lumbering handling. The other shortcoming of the SRT4 is the cheapo level of finish to the interior that does little to distinguish itself from the interior of the base economy versions. Despite all of the cute contraptions like a “cool zone” compartment for drinks, death by hard plastic is the most egregious fault , which compared to it’s competition seems particularly low-grade. Some will also likely be disappointed that the SRT4 starts at just a shade under $24,000; several thousand dollars higher than the previous Neon SRT4.

With a standard 332-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, choice of two advanced transmissions and a full array of driver-oriented interior features, the new 370Z is designed to be one of the top performance values in the world.

The move to one set phrase "the way you move" reflects alignment of the direction Nissan is taking to meet changing consumer needs and wants.

"SHIFT_ has always been the core of Nissan's DNA. It is rethinking the ordinary, changing your point of view, and being original, forward thinking and challenging," said Christian Meunier, vice president, Nissan Marketing, NNA. "Our commitment to the philosophy of SHIFT_ has become even more critical as we look to the future and the pressures of economic and environmental change that are affecting consumer behavior in how they interact with and impact the world."

All Nissan national marketing materials will include the new SHIFT_the way you move tagline beginning in January.

New York Tow Trucks Set World Record For Largest Parade/Assemblage Of Beer Guts

[Photo Source: AP Photo/Metropolitan NY Towing Association, Ray Stubblebine via The Washington Post]

Actually, all jesting aside, we think this is pretty cool: On Saturday, September 20, 2008, the Metropolitan New York Towing Association broke the world record for the largest parade of its kind, earning a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. To prepare for the milestone event, 292 tow truck drivers and their rigs assembled in the parking lot at Shea Stadium on Saturday morning, inspiring a wave of idle observers to frantically run back and read the fine print on the sign they parked under.

From there, the well-hung procession snaked its way along New York’s roadways before arriving at their final parade stop, the tarmac at Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Field. Positioning themselves on the vacant airstrip to spell out “New York”, the Barons of the Belt Lift successfully shattered the previous world record, set in 2004 by 83 tow trucks in Washington State. Bonus QOTD: What Detroit-Based Organization Sucked The Hardest This Year? [Bonus Question Of The Day]

Some of you noticed the football-themed posts spliced over from Deadspin regarding the Detroit Lions' sad season. This was Lions-faithful Ray Wert's idea and he wants to know if anyone in Detroit did worse?

Today's Bonus QOTD follows the almost tragic coincidence of the Detroit Lions going 0-16 the same year of the Carpocalypse. It's been a period for Detroit full of political scandal, financial failure and athletic collapse considered bad even by Michigan standards. But has anyone underperformed worse than the Lions?

Though not based out of Detroit, Kirk Kerk's Ford gamble in Detroit finally ended today with him losing an estimated $600+ million. Still, he didn't lose all his money while the Lions lost all of their games. Chrysler is suffering, but they still haven't fired their coach. So, no, few in Detroit are as bad as the Lions.

Arse Freeze-A-Palooza Lemons Day One Complete, Triumph TR7 In The Lead! [24 Hours Of Lemons]

You're probably checking the calendar to make sure it's not April 1st, after seeing that headline. Really- as of last night, the Cape Coventry TR7 is the current 24 Hours Of LeMons Arse Freeze-A-Palooza leader!

However, you Triumph fans shouldn't get too worked up, because even by TR7 standards... well, this car isn't in such great shape. In fact, it's in such rough shape that LeMons Chief Justice Loverman decided to give it 50 bonus laps, and when you add the 100 laps it actually finished today, it's winning! Of course, it will take a miracle tomorrow for Cape Coventry to keep that lead, but owners of British Leyland products need to believe in miracles! Full standings below:

Yes, the Black Metal V8olvo is sitting down pretty low in the rankings, and I'm the one to blame for that; I had a case of brain-fade after getting a black flag and mistook the road to the closed-off portion of the track for the pit exit, which led to a great deal of unhappiness among track officials and the V8olvo spending a long, long time following a reggae-blasting VW bus around. I'll write it up in more detail later on, when I've got time to to justice to the tale of my mighty fail.

We've also got some bonus car photos shot by Mad Science and his father and brother; they drove all the way up here from SoCal to check out the race and help out with photography duties, and you can see more of their work here and here. Thanks, guys!

Top Ten Ways to Prepare Your Car For Winter

Winter is on it’s way, and cold weather can be tough on cars. So here are a few simple steps you can take to help protect your car from the badness nature can inflict. They’re not all necessary, but they’re all helpful, so do what you can.

1. Change Your Oil and Oil Filter

Changing your oil is always number 1, it’s one of the most important and helpful things you can do as a car owner. You generally don’t need to change the type of oil you use for the winter unless you live in an area where it gets very cold, consistently 10 degrees F. In that case, you’d want to switch from the usual 10W30 to a thinner 5W30. Thinner oil will flow better cold weather, so that when you start your vehicle, the oil gets moving in the engine faster and more efficiently.

Again, changing the type of oil isn’t necessary unless you live in a considerably cold area. But either way, always make sure to change your oil and oil filter when winter comes around.

2. Check You Battery

So many people forget about their battery and end up stuck in some parking lot in the dead of winter asking strangers for a jumpstart. If the battery 5 years old, get a new one, it’s that simple. If it’s a relatively young battery, just check the cables to see if they’re on tight, and look for corrosion. Battery corrosion will be a greenish white powery substance, like this:

If you see any of that on your battery posts, loosen the cables and clean off the corrosion with a wire brush. Make sure you get it all off and clean it up nicely, it’ll improve your battery’s performance. Then just put the cables back on and tighten them up.

3. Replace the Wipers and Wiper Fluid

Wiper blades and fluid are a lot more important than they may seem. If you’re caught in freezing rain with poor blades and no wiper fluid, you could very easily get into an accident.

Wipers blades are usually only good for a year or so at most. Hot summers will distort the rubber and when winter comes, the freezing temperatures causes them to fall apart. It’s always a good idea to replace your wiper blade in the fall just before any serious cold weather.

As for wiper fluid, just pop the hood and fill up your wiper fluid reservoir. The reservoir bottle should say wiper fluid on it and have a picture of a windshield, pretty obvious. It’s pretty common to have clogged wiper fluid nozzles, so it’s a good idea to make sure the fluid is coming out properly. They’re on the hood or on the arm of the windshield wiper. If they are clogged, just take a pin or needle and clear out the nozzle, and it should be fine.

4. Check Your Tires

The last thing you want is a blowout or a flat in the freezing cold winter months. Rubber doesn’t do well in the cold, so tires that are ready to die have a habit of doing it in the winter.

Inspect your tires and the tread. You can use the old penny trick:
Take a penny and hold it so that the top of Lincoln’s head is showing. Place the top of Lincoln’s head into one of the tire tread grooves; try to measure in the lowest point within the tread. If any part of Lincoln’s head is obscured by the tread, you have a safe amount of tread. However, if you can see above Lincoln’s head, then you’re ready for a new tire. Here’s an example:

The top of Lincoln’s head is covered - that means this tire is safe. If his head isn’t covered, get some new tires

5. Check Your Antifreeze/Coolant

Anti-freeze should be replaced at least every two years, so if you didn’t do it last year, it’s time. It’s easy to do with an inexpensive tester available at parts and department stores in the automotive section. Those testers just determine if the mixture is 50/50 (50% water and 50% antifreeze), so in addition to that you’ll want to check the levels by eye. Another good idea is to check the color, which can show you if there are any signs of rust or dirt in the system.

6. Check Your Belts

Just like your tires and your wiper blades, belts are made of rubber. Rubber doesn’t like cold. So if your belts are going to go, they’re going to go in the winter. All you really have to do is check for cracks. It may seem difficult to get in there and look at every inch of the serpentine belt, but remember, it’s much easier to look over your fully intact belt on some Sunday afternoon than it is to try to fix a broken belt on the side of the road in the middle of winter.

7. Replace Your Fuel Filter

Your fuel filter keeps dirt and water out of the fuel going to the engine. So when winter comes, the water that has built up in your fuel filter can freeze, and block or slow the flow of fuel. It’s easier to just get a new fuel filter.

If you’re not down for that, you might want to at least consider putting a moisture removal additive in your fuel tank. It’s nearly impossible to prevent at least a small bit of water from getting into your fuel. In the winter, that can lead to frozen fuel lines, so put that additive in every 5 or so fill-ups.

8. Check You Spark Plugs and Wires

Replacing worn out spark plugs will save you fuel and ensure quick starts on cold mornings.

First you’ll want to look over the spark plug wires and make sure they’re not cracked, since that can affect performance and gas mileage. After you look them over you can just give them a twist and pull them off and then remove the spark plugs themselves. Not everyone is mechanically inclined enough to attempt this, but if you are it can be helpful. It’s actually not that difficult. You just ratchet them out, and examine the electrodes for any excessive wear or contamination from engine oil or fuel. If they look clean, they can be re-used. If they’re corroded or fouled from engine oil, be sure to replace them.

9. Make Sure All Your Lights Are Working

It’s easy to have a bulb go out and not notice it. That’s why when winter comes along, it’s good to take some time to make sure all your bulbs are fine. You’ll need someone else to help you with this, but it’s extremely easy. Just have a friend sit in the driver seat, turn on the headlights, then the highbeams, then the turn signals, then check the turn signals in the rear, and then the brakes, and you’re all set. If any lights are out, just head to an automotive store with your car make and model and they’ll be able to help you out.

10. Have a Winter Kit in Your Car

This is actually more important than it sounds. Your winter car kit should include, jumper cables, a blanket in case you get stranded, a small shovel to dig out your car if need be, and an ice scraper to clean off your windshield, a battery powered radio with extra batteries, road salt or sand, emergency flares, and a fluorescent distress flag. It’s always good to be prepared.

Winding Road picks their 12 favorite autos, including... the Dodge Sprinter?!

When Winding Road picked their 12 favorite cars of 2008, they went out of their way to diversify. Their "Dynamic Dozen" includes vehicles as inexpensive as the $14,000 Honda Fit up to the $114,000 Audi R8, with everything from the Ford Mustang to the Porsche Cayman/Boxster in between. There are some gaping omissions like the Nissan GT-R and perhaps the Pontiac G8 GT, but Winding Road's criteria stipulated that the majority of the staff had to drive the vehicles in order for them to be nominated, which might explain why some vehicles don't appear.

The list is filled with great vehicles, with one really big (literally) surprise: the Dodge Sprinter. The $37,000 people/cargo hauler doesn't crank through the twisties and it couldn't beat a pack mule in a quarter mile, but WR loves the German-born hauler for its distinct personality and core competencies. It can haul people or things in great quantities, it has very solid interior, has a great service record, and WR claims it's a lot of fun to drive, too.

As surprising as the nod to the Sprinter was, we almost reserved as much shock for the lack of a BMW 3-Series. We were beginning to think that the best-selling BMW was a requirement for any "best" list. They did outline why they chose the 1-Series, though, so that's probably close enough. Hit the read link below to catch Winding Road's top 12 from beginning to end.
