American history read in dealership nameplates, part 2: The junkyard crawl

Pallesen's, Drumheller, Alberta

When Jim Donnelly cruised the mostly original condition cars at the Tom Mack Auction in Charlotte earlier this year, looking for nameplates from long-lost AMC dealerships, he at least had decent nameplates to read from. Ken Ames had a tougher time reading the nameplates at the recent liquidation of Gary Bennink’s AMC and Mopar collection, but came through with several photos that he’s allowed us to reprint here.

Pallesen’s, above, didn’t seem to stick around long enough to make the 1983 dealership list, so we don’t know where exactly in Drumheller, Alberta, they operated. Ken said he spotted this tag on a Concord, which could very well have been one of the last cars to leave the dealership.

Midtown Motors, Hamilton, ON

Midtown Motors in Hamilton, Ontario, was located at 756 King St. E., the current location of a place called Xanadu, a “K-12 miscellaneous education business.” Another Concord displayed this tag.

Cedarvale AMC, Burnaby, BC

Cedarvale AMC in Burnaby, British Columbia, gave their address right on this ‘72 Gremlin’s dealer tag: 5965 Kingsway, apparently the current location of Coquilam Chrysler Plymouth and Deer Lake Chrysler Dodge Jeep. The 1983 list gives another dealership location for American Motors (Canada) at 7972 Enterprise St., which now appears to house a Volvo Penta location.

Crestview, Regina, Saskatchewan

Crestview AMC in Regina, Saskatchewan, didn’t survive long enough to make the 1983 list. Tag spotted on a ‘74 Matador coupe.

Jungle Motors, Surrey, British Columbia

Hard to read, but Ken told us this tag on this 1978 Concord denoted Jungle Motors, of Surrey, British Columbia. Jungle doesn’t appear on the 1983 list, but Malman Motors of Surrey does. One and the same? Malman was located at 6468 King George Highway, which now appears to be a strip mall.

Riviera Motors, Edmonton, Alberta

Riviera Motors in Edmonton, Alberta, definitely did last through at least 1983, located at 5425 Calgary Trail, which now appears to be the site of Capital Jeep Dodge and an Auto Canada Used Superstore. The tag appeared on another 1978 Concord.

Wheat city Motors, Brandon, Manitoba

Wheat City Motors of Brandon, Manitoba, may or may not have become Len’s A.M. Motors Ltd. by 1983, located at 441 10th St. No telling what’s at that location now. Tag spotted on a 1968 Ambassador.

Devonian Motors, Edmonton, Alberta

Finally, though Ken didn’t spot this plate from Devonian Motors of Edmonton on any of Bennink’s cars, it is on his 1973 Hornet. Another Edmonton dealership is on the 1983 list – Allarco Group at 11350 Jasper Ave – but Ken noted that Devonian now sells Hyundais, and none of the three current Hyundai locations in Edmonton are on Jasper Avenue.
