Flash of Genius: The Story of Robert Kearns

The new film, Flash of Genius, is the story of the inventor of the intermittent windshield wiper, Robert Kearns. It’s billed as a “hero versus the establishment” story, but the actual history is a bit more complicated.

Carmakers had known for a long time that existing windshield wipers weren’t getting the job done properly. They moved constantly, often scraping a dry windshield tearing up the blades edges. The solution was also obvious: an intermittent system that would wipe, then pause for a few seconds, then wipe again. Several inventors and engineers at Ford came up with designs, but each had various problems of their own.

Robert Kearns eventually came along with a system that worked better than the previous ones. He used an electrical current to flow and fill a capacitor, when the charge reached a certain voltage, it discharged and the wipers wiped. He took it to Ford, they showed interest, but eventually changed their minds. Ford did, however, end up using a system similar to Kearns’s. So Kearns sued.

Ford’s legal team argued that his patents were overly broad and therefore invalid. Former Ford engineer, Ted Daykin, told The New Yorker in a 1993 article, “An electronic timing device was an obvious thing to try next. How can you patent something that is in the natural evolution of technology?” The intermittent wiper, according to Daykin, was really the work of dozens of anonymous engineers at Ford, Trico, and other firms.

It really was an exceedingly simple and broad design, and yet Kearns eventually won his suit — $10.2 million from Ford in 1990 and $18.7 million from Chrysler in 1995, though both juries determined that the companies had not intentionally infringed on his patents.

The moral of the story? I’m not really sure. Patent an obvious idea and you can extort money from large corporations? The little guy is always right, even when he’s wrong? I can’t really pin down the exact moral here. I just know it hard for me to root for Robert Kearns.

Is Ford Going to Unveil a Taurus SHO Successor Next Month?

2010_ford_taurus_31.jpg
Ford officially unveiled the all-new 2010 Taurus at the Detroit Auto Show this week and now we have a new clue that a "performance" version is next to be unveiled.

Ford launched a brand new Taurus website. On the gallery page there is a small amount of text that says "Coming February 2009...Performance Series." Could this be a more powerful version of the Taurus with the new EcoBoost V6? It remains to be seen, but since the Chicago Auto Show is next month, we expect to see something there.

Detroit 09': 2010 Ford Taurus Officially Unveiled!

2010_ford_taurus_4.jpg
Ford has officially unveiled the all-new 2010 Ford Taurus that makes its debut at the Detroit Auto Show.

The 2010 Ford Taurus receives all-new styling inside and out that is far more interesting to look at than the current generation. Ford describes the styling of the new Taurus as a combination of style with substance, just like the original Taurus back in 1986.

The new Taurus is powered by a 263 horsepower 3.5L V6 that is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. FWD is standard and all-wheel-drive is optional. The 3.5 EcoBoost engine is also planned at a later date for the Taurus. A two-speed fuel pump and Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shut-Off technology help the Taurus achieve best in class gas mileage.

There are also many new technological features available on the new Taurus such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent Access with Push-Button Start,
SecuriCode™ Keyless Entry Keypad and MyKey.

The all-new Taurus will be available this summer at starting price of $25,995, which is the same starting price as the 2009 model.

Jiangling Motors Plans European Factory, Ford Demonstrates Need For Brush-Up On “Tax Sheltering 101″

Jiangling Motors, the Chinese auto company and producer of Ford commercial vehicles, has announced plans to construct a production facility in Poland. Already slightly familiar with the terrain, in 2005, Jiangling’s European importation arm, Landwind Motors, introduced the X-Pedition to the European market with disastrous results. The vehicle fared reasonably well until German crash-test results revealed the X-Pedition to be essentially as safe as a can of tuna fish. The X-Pedition was immediately pulled from the market, heavily redesigned, and reintroduced in 2006 at the Paris Auto Show alongside another Landwind/Jiangling offering: the Fashion minivan. For no apparent reason, neither vehicle has yet to be officially released to the consuming public. At this time, we’d like to patiently remind all struggling Detroit auto corporations that, ideally, offshore tax shelters should spend as little time in the headlines as possible…

Although plan specifics are still being discussed with Polish authorities, if given the green light, Jiangling’s plant will make become the first one Chinese origin to be based on European soil. Unrealistically optimistic given their recent escapades, Jiangling/Landwind anticipate the European factory to average a yearly output of some 400,000 cars, placing it squarely above the region’s current leader in output Fiat Auto Poland with 362,000.

Not-So-Big Three Automakers Take Corporate Jets To Beg For Money From Congress [Financiapocalypse]

It's probably a bad thing to fly a private jet from Detroit to Washington, DC when you're going to ask Congress to provide you a multi-billion dollar loan to bail you out of a financial crisis. That fact hasn't stopped Ford's Alan Mulally, along with the heads of the other automakers, who not only flew to D.C. in the Ford private jet but are, apparently, unwilling to fully cut themselves from the corporate crack that is their private air forces. This really disturbs us. We've been having all sorts of problems with the way the US automakers have managed their message in making the ask for money from the Feds for survival. First they weren't getting their message out. Now, however, they're getting the wrong message out. Frankly, when folks begin saying things like this:

When the management of these automakers start acting like they’re in crisis, then perhaps we’ll believe them. They’ve come to Congress not to rescue their companies but to salvage their lifestyles. This is an industry that desperately needs bankruptcy and collapse to put an end to unrealistic labor deals and obnoxious executive behavior. The American taxpayer doesn’t have any business subsidizing this failure."

You know you've got a problem not even a Rick Wagoner-penned op-ed in the WSJ will solve. What GM, Ford and Chrysler need to do is start getting the PR people in charge of fixing their image problem ASAP. If the PR people were already running the show, fire them and bring in new ones who understand the importance of a strong public image right now. Then sell the planes — despite there probably being a rational reason for them — fix your image and get back to the task at hand. You know, saving your company. [Hot Air]

Year of the Thunderbird

Back in 2002 Ford brought back its iconic Thunderbird. The Thunderbird was given a retro design (actually starting the whole retro look) making it seem as if it was taken straight from the 50s. The Thunderbird was discontinued in 2005 after dropping sales (possibly due to introduction of the redesigned Mustang). Well cry no more T-Bird lovers, it’s said that the T-bird will return in 2012 with a retro look, keeping the classic two seater design. Via Thunderbirdnest  Thanks ___nes___!
