Martin mystery

The mail comes. We rip open the envelope. And here, from Horace Keane of Wilmington, North Carolina, is a photo of a truly weird vehicle. We don’t know much about it. Neither did Horace, who just found in lying around. That’s where you come in.

A little investigation, though, leads us to surmise that this may be the sole running prototype ever built of the stillborn Martin truck, as proposed by the Martin Aeroplane Company, then based in Garden City, New York, on Long Island. The documents that Horace sent along indicate that the truck actually came out of Rochelle Park, New Jersey, just west of New York City, and in the photo, it’s wearing a New Jersey license plate from the 1940s. The tiny rig ran on a wheelbase of just 60 inches, and boasted an “aeroplane-type rubber suspension.” Why it never saw production, we can’t say, although the Depression’s onset probably had something to do with it.
