2007 Chicago Auto Show: Saturn Astra Interior Up Close

Astra1

One of the most anticipated introductions today was Saturn’s new Astra compact two-door and four-door hatchbacks. I got to spend some up-close time with the Astra and came away even more impressed than I was when we first ran the press photos on Monday.

Astrawheel

Overall, all the materials are high-quality, with buttons and knobsmade from a soft, rubber-like substance that was easy to grip.

The steering wheel has an odd center shape but felt meaty in my hands.Controls included a volume dial on the right that spins up and down. Ihave no clue what the controls on the left do.

Astragauges
The gauges were clear, and the yellow color is unique.

Astracenter

The center stack seemed a bit jumbled, with a lot of room betweenenvironmental and stereo controls, BUT I love the huge knobs forvolume, tuning, temperature, vent speed, etc. More cars should have thegood, old-fashioned knob play this prominent a position.

Astrastick

The manual shifter felt nice in the hand, but I couldn’t test it out on the turnstile.

Astralights

Over to the left of the steering wheel is another knob! This one is forthe headlights; there are buttons for the fog lights and illuminationlevels.

Astrahatch

The hatchback didn’t seem very big in the two-door version — thefour-door was being lifted on a jack to get properly positioned, so Icouldn’t open that one — with little cargo room. However, it seemedlarger than the VW GTI or Volvo C30.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car

Indy1

The Chevrolet Corvette will once again pace the Indianapolis 500 this year and, as usual, a limited number — 500 — of production versions will go on sale this spring. Available only as a convertible, the special edition comes in only one color, Atomic Orange, and comes with a number of dress-up items to grab the attention of otherwise colorblind passersby:

  • Special Indianapolis 500 fender badges
  • Z06 rear spoiler
  • New aluminum “split-spoke” wheels in Sterling Silver
  • Ebony seats with embroidered Indianapolis 500 logos
  • Interior trim plate and pods painted Atomic Orange
  • Atomic Orange engine covers

Otherwise, the pace car is a basic 2007 Corvette six-speed manual with the Z51 performance package, navigation system and Bose stereo. The price?  It’s $66,995, including destination. A six-speed automatic with shift paddles is available and will cost $68,245, including destination fee. More photos below.

New Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid to Debut in Chicago

2007toyotahighlander

Carmakers have been hush-hush about what they’ll be debuting at the Chicago Auto Show next month, but finally we have some news. Toyota announced today that it would debut its redesigned 2008 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid SUVs on Feb. 7 at McCormick Place. We don’t have much more information, but it is kind of funny that while most automakers are trying not to use the term “crossover” for their car-based SUVs these days, Toyota is still using sport utility vehicle for the Highlander, which is currently based on the same platform as the Toyota Camry. The 2008 Highlander is rumored to be based on the larger Avalon platform to make room for a roomier third row of seats.
